6 Days KILIMANJARO
MARANGU ROUTE
"6 days on the coca-cola route"
Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu Route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well-established route. Many favor the Marangu Route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.
It is the shortest route so the minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Kilimanjaro is wise, especially for Marangu Route. Marangu is more appealing to many during the rainy season (mid March – May, November), where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have limited time to climb Kilimanjaro.
Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Welcome to Tanzania! You will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet the company representative and your mountain guide who give you a thorough climb briefing, answering all your questions. There will also be an equipment check. Any items that you are lacking may be rented locally of good quality at a fair rate. If your arrival is late in the day, the briefing and equipment check may happen early the next morning instead. No meals are included in the itinerary for this day.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Day 2:Mandera Hut to Horombo hut (3760m).
Today’s trek will have you leave the forest and trek across the open moorlands. You’ll be gaining a lot of elevation today! You’ll be spending the next two nights at Horombo Hut, where there is typically more of a social atmosphere compared to the other huts.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day - Horombo Hut (3760m)
It’s up to you to decide what you’d like to do today. Relax, enjoy the views, make new friends, and fuel up on hearty food in preparation for the rest of your journey. If you’re feeling restless, take a hike near Mawenzi Peak.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4730m)
The landscape will change again today as you climb up into the alpine desert it will begin to look more like a lunar landscape! Your porters will be collecting water from the last source of water along the trail. You may still be well rested from yesterday, but you’ll still want to go to bed early in preparation for tomorrow morning’s midnight departure!
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Gillman's Point (5681m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Descend to Horombo Hut (3760m)
A middle of the night start for this challenging day trekking on steep scree up to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro “The Roof of Africa”. Here you will want to take in the moment and get some photos for your memory. But you should not stay long or else you will feel the fatigue and cold. There is several more hours of trekking, descending to Kibo Hut for tea and biscuits or soup and then down to the thicker air a relative warmth to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Descend from Horombo to Marangu gate. Drive back to the hotel (B&B).
Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where our vehicle will be waiting to return you to Moshi where those who qualified will receive their certificates and you may tip the climb staff and say farewell to them. Back at your hotel undoubtedly you will want a long hot shower and celebrate.
Departure Day
Our driver will be available to take you to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) at any time you require. If you have a safari planned through Dotcom Safaris, your safari guide will pick you up at the pre-arranged time. If you have planned for time in Zanzibar, we will have gone through the arrangements with you. Your breakfast is included in your itinerary this day as long as your departure is not before the hotel’s scheduled breakfast hours. Hotel checkout is at 10am but if you have a later departure we can try to arrange a late checkout or a day room (extra cost for day room).
For the Marangu 5 Day itinerary, it is the same as the six day version except day 3 (acclimatization day) is eliminated.
